Sorry...

Sorry… we took a hiatus (work, school, life, etc…) but are back and ready to update with some frequency. Let’s see what’s on our plate:

1. VAPAC Charter Revisions – anybody know who or what prompted this move? Is it district directed or the DLC’s attempt to further their stranglehold on things? Can the amended charter be posted here? Can anybody get their hands on it?

2. VAPAC Lawsuit against the district – what’s going on here? Any info?

3. Rosemont schedule SNAFU – they’re on the 4x4; now they’re not; now they are again but only for the rest of this year. Any truth to the account the admin. brought this upon themselves by violating a previously negotiated agreement between the district and the union? How is the school trying to spin the situation? We’ve heard some things, what have you heard?

4. School Closings – closing elementary schools with fewer than 300 students to open high schools with fewer than 200 students? Closing Kit Carson to make it the “new” Sac High? Rumor has it that West Campus is on the chopping block.

5. St. HOPE – we’ve heard that the school has a reported enrollment of 1100 students – far below what they promised to maintain in their charter – has collapsed several small learning communities due to declining enrollment – creating far fewer opportunities than they promised in their charter – and is thinking about using the Sac High campus to house a middle school, thereby completing their k-12 kingdom.

6. Money -- several people report that they have been told that their school is out of money to fund events, programs, etc. Nevertheless, one of these schools – Rosemont – has a $20,000 dollar retreat slated for this summer. Oh yeah, but they’re still out of money.

7. SIFs (or School Improvement Facilitators) – highly paid administrators who do what? Several schools report that their SIFs make $90,000 + dollars a year and nobody is really sure what they are supposed to do. What do they do and are their salaries justified being that money is tight? Seems that the SCUSD has never met with an admin position that they won’t create and throw money at. Question: how many SIFs salaries could keep a few of the schools slated to be closed off the chopping block?

8. The Death of SLCs – rumor has it the money has dried up from Carnegie to fund this grand idea. Advisory periods have disappeared and the advent of the small school idea pretty much co-opts the SLC model. So, with all this choice, why continue to fund it?

Well, all I know is that St Hope is, as I type' forming the Middle school 6-8 on the High school campus. The Principal (Herinder Pegany) of PS7 (St Hope's Elementary school) has been transfered to oversee the development of the 6-8 program. Oh, and I think he is also the new admin of one of the schools at the high school. So he is doing both. One of the admin from the high school is now the Principal at PS7. It seems to be a game of musical chairs. Pagany is actually a good admin, I can see him leaving the St Hope situation at some point. You can't spread someone that thin and expect them to stay.
Well, that's it for me.

I heard through the grapevine (a reliable grapevine) that Allen Young is applying for the principal position at VAPAC.

I don't know who Allen Young is. Would this be a good thing or is he buds with the dlc mess of folks?

No principal will have meaningful power under the current regime.

Is Joanna de la Cuesta back to VAPAC? And she and her son are still running the school?

An after school meeting today announced the removal of Arbatel de la Cuesta from his position at VAPAC, as well as the current office manager. Allen Young was instated as the current prinicipal.

The meeting was held by the district and included district and union representatives. Many were surprised by the current action. A district auditor was also assigned to the school.

The state of the current charter revisions remains unclear. I have a copy of several pages that contain key changes to the charter. I can post these revisions if anyone wants to see them. The revisions make all staff VAPAC employees with an unclear retirement plan and no stated health benefits. If the school board approves the charter, the de la Cuestas will return with unchecked power.

A parent meeting will be held tomorrow (Wednesday, March 1) to inform parents of the district staffing changes. I believe the start time is 6:30pm. I urge all parents to show up and have their voices heard. And remember, your child's happiness is not necessarily a sign of a quality education.

Looking at the structures for next year at the District level, I don't believe the revised charter will be approved. The County was approached to be the LEA and said NO WAY. They have not met the muster for the State to allow them to be their own LEA - so - it is up the SCUSD. I think it is a predictable matter at this point.

The name of the site is SCUSD Watch - what about America's Choice? I have not seen their name in the Sac Bee when talking about school revisions. Does anyone know what is going on there?
